Angel Footprints
From a small diabetes living experience camp in 2007 to a community connecting Chinese-speaking people living with diabetes around the world — every step of our journey has been made possible by our members, their families, volunteers, healthcare professionals, partners and supporters.

2007 | Angel of Diabetes Was Founded
The overwhelming response to the Diabetes Lifestyle Camp strengthened founder Kammie’s belief that people living with diabetes needed a platform where they could support one another and continue learning about diabetes. This inspired her to establish a patient organisation dedicated to continuing diabetes education.
The name “Angel of Diabetes” actually came from the participants of the Lifestyle Camp. After the camp, they affectionately began calling Kammie their “Angel of Diabetes”. Through her diabetes education, they discovered a new way of living with diabetes — as if an angel were walking alongside them, bringing hope, happiness and better health. This heartfelt name given by the participants eventually became the name of the organisation.
Angel of Diabetes established its first centre in Yau Ma Tei, providing a place where members could gather. From there, we began holding regular diabetes education classes, bringing people together to learn, share experiences and support one another.

2008 | Ongoing Diabetes Education
Supporting Our Members Through Learning
Since 2008, Angel of Diabetes has been offering regular diabetes education classes at our centre, covering nutrition, exercise, blood glucose management and everyday living. These classes provide practical knowledge to help people living with diabetes integrate diabetes management into their daily lives.
Our classes are more than just a place to learn. They also provide a space for members to meet, share experiences and support one another. Over the years, our programmes have continued to evolve with the changing needs of our members, but our commitment to helping people live well with diabetes has remained unchanged.

2008 | Launch of Diabetic Message
To bring diabetes education to more people living with diabetes and the wider community, Angel of Diabetes launched Diabetic Message in 2008, sharing practical and easy-to-understand information on diabetes, healthy recipes, everyday living and stories from people living with diabetes.
Published three times a year in March, July and November, Diabetic Message is available free of charge in both print and digital formats, extending diabetes education beyond the classroom and into everyday life.

2009 | “Angel of Diabetes – Walking with You” World Diabetes Day Carnival
In 2009, Angel of Diabetes organised its first large-scale World Diabetes Day Carnival. Rather than engaging a public relations company, founder Kammie and a group of members took on the entire event themselves — from planning and preparation to execution.
Through this event, we wanted to show that people living with chronic conditions are not simply recipients of support. Given the opportunity, they too can contribute their talents, take on responsibilities and come together to make a positive contribution to society.
On the day of the event, 100 people living with diabetes checked their blood glucose together, highlighting the importance of blood glucose monitoring in diabetes management. We were also joined by artist Joyce Cheng, who served as our “Diabetes Heart Ambassador”, helping us raise public awareness of diabetes.
The event not only introduced Angel of Diabetes to a wider audience, but also gave us our first opportunity to showcase the strength and capabilities of people living with diabetes. It marked the beginning of our annual “Angel of Diabetes – Walking with You” World Diabetes Day activities.

2012 | Caring for Diabetes Programme
Since 2012, Angel of Diabetes has been bringing the Caring for Diabetes Programme into different communities each month, providing free preliminary diabetes risk assessments to help raise public awareness and encourage people to better understand their risk of developing diabetes.
Beyond community outreach, we also work with companies and organisations to bring diabetes risk assessments and health education directly into workplaces and different communities.
Over the years, the programme has received support from Cigna Worldwide Insurance, enabling us to reach even more communities. Since its launch, the programme has recorded more than 500,000 attendances.

2013 | A Place That Helped Us Carry On
In 2013, Angel of Diabetes moved into its new centre on the ground floor of Yat King House, Lai King Estate. The premises were allocated to us by the Hong Kong Housing Authority under its concessionary letting scheme for charitable organisations, marking an important turning point in our journey.
Before then, we had been renting an office in Yau Ma Tei at market rates, with much of our limited resources going towards rent. The concessionary rent at our new centre significantly eased the financial burden, allowing us to devote more resources to building our team, expanding diabetes education and developing our services.
Our centre may not be in the most convenient or prominent location, but it has always been very precious to us. More than simply an office and a place for our members to gather, it gave Angel of Diabetes a stable home where we could continue to grow and move forward.
Securing these premises involved an application and assessment process by the relevant authorities. For a small organisation that was still growing at the time, being granted the premises was also a meaningful recognition of the work we had been doing in the community.
Without this little place, there might not be the Angel of Diabetes we know today.

2015 | School Sugar Free Day
Angel of Diabetes visited primary and secondary schools to engage students through interactive talks, games and lunchtime activities, helping them understand free sugars, the health impact of excessive sugar intake, and how to make healthier food choices in everyday life.
Through the programme, we aim to encourage healthier eating habits from an early age, reduce excessive sugar intake and the risk of obesity, while building greater awareness of diabetes prevention and healthy living.

Enjoying Happy Moments Together
Over the years, Angel of Diabetes has organised special gatherings and celebrations, bringing our members together to enjoy good food, laughter and happy moments.
Each menu is thoughtfully designed with high-fibre, low-sugar and low-fat choices, allowing everyone to enjoy the occasion while experiencing how healthy eating can be part of everyday life.
Because managing diabetes is not just about blood glucose — it is also about enjoying life.

University Research & Diabetes Education
Since 2008, Angel of Diabetes has collaborated with different universities, helping to recruit people living with diabetes for research studies. These collaborations have given participants opportunities to contribute to diabetes research while helping build further evidence and experience in diabetes education and management.
2012 | The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Angel of Diabetes participated in a research study examining the impact of diabetes education on the health of people living with diabetes. Founder Kammie served as the Programme Director and Educator for the diabetes education component, providing structured education to participants with type 2 diabetes.
The study found that diabetes education had a positive impact on participants’ health, with particularly significant improvements in HbA1c and body weight.
2023 | The University of Hong Kong
Angel of Diabetes participated in the “Diabetes Prevention” research project supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, involving people with prediabetes and obesity.
Our team provided diabetes education and followed participants for one year through individual nutrition consultations, exercise classes, online educational videos and cooking demonstrations, helping them incorporate healthier lifestyle practices into their everyday lives.

From Hong Kong to the World
With the growth of online education and social media, Angel of Diabetes has gradually extended its diabetes education beyond Hong Kong to reach Chinese communities around the world. Since 2020, we have transformed our doctor-led talks into online educational videos, breaking geographical barriers and making Cantonese-language diabetes education accessible to Chinese audiences wherever they may be.
In 2021, founder Kammie was invited to appear on the online health platform HiEggo (健康旦), where she shared her experience and insights on living with and managing diabetes. The interview received more than 2,000,000 views, introducing Angel of Diabetes to a much wider Chinese audience worldwide and becoming an important milestone in connecting with overseas Chinese communities.
As our overseas community continued to grow, we also extended this connection through a Facebook group led by founder Kammie, creating a space where people living with diabetes across different countries can share experiences, learn from one another, offer encouragement and support each other along the way.
Today, Angel of Diabetes has members and supporters in different parts of the world. For many Chinese people living overseas, access to diabetes education in a familiar language can be limited. This makes our mission even more meaningful — to continue reaching out from Hong Kong and bring practical, reliable diabetes education to Chinese communities around the world.
From Hong Kong to the world, connecting Chinese diabetes communities across borders.
Wherever you are, on your journey with diabetes, Angel of Diabetes walks with you.

Diabetes Education in Print
The Journey Continues…
From a small Diabetes Living Experience Camp in 2007 to a community that connects Chinese-speaking people living with diabetes around the world, every step of Angel of Diabetic’s journey has been made possible through the trust and support of people living with diabetes, their families, volunteers, healthcare professionals, partners, and supporters.
We believe that diabetes education is not only about sharing knowledge, but also about sharing hope and empowering lives.
As we look to the future, Angel of Diabetic will continue to stay true to its mission—supporting more people living with diabetes to live healthy, confident, and hopeful lives.
Because no one should have to walk the diabetes journey alone.
